Many of us are becoming more health conscious these days. We search for the best of organic foods and use the most natural skin products we can find.

But there are still some folks who don't yet know the harmful effects of paraffin candles. Paraffin wax, a derivative of kerosene, is known to contain 11 (eleven) compounds classified as dangerous by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), some of which are carcinogenic (cancer causing) in nature. Even though the US no longer allows the use of lead, some imported candles still have leaded wicks.  Burning a candle with a leaded wick for three hours has been found to increase levels of lead 9 to 11 times over the acceptable limit set by the EPA. With chronic exposure there may be damage to the liver, the kidney, and the central nervous system.

Paraffin wax is a waste product of the petroleum industry, which is bleached then texturized with acrolyn, a known carcinogen.  When lit, it releases toxins that hover in the area where it is burned. These toxins then may be inhaled into the lungs.

Effects of paraffin candles have been compared to second-hand smoke. As a Registered  Respiratory Therapist with over 20 years of experience in asthma and allergies, I can speak with some authority on the environmental hazards of everyday household items.  When assessing a client for possible causes of respiratory distress, I take into consideration anything they might use in their homes that would change air quality, such as cigarettes, candles, incense, and oil-burning lamps.

The negative effects of cigarettes are obvious, but less obvious may be the soot that comes from an innocent-looking paraffin candle.  This soot is known to contain many of the toxins that are found in diesel fuel. When the candle is lit, the soot is released into the air and coats the surrounding area (LUNGS?).

Soy candles are clean- burning and soot-free, a wonderful and healthy alternative to paraffin candles.
